Universal Pictures introduced the first look at Miami Vice '85, with the official Instagram account for the film also revealing Austin Butler as Sonny Crockett. The two character shots arrived with a simple message: the movie is "now in production."
Joseph Kosinski, the director behind Top Gun: Maverick and F1, is helming the reboot from a script by Dan Gilroy, who wrote and directed Nightcrawler and worked on Andor. Universal has dated the film for May 19, 2028, in theaters.
Back to Where It All Started
Don't expect a remix of the whole five-season run. The story is inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the original NBC series, following two undercover detectives through the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami. The title says exactly which year we're living in.
Cameras reportedly started rolling in Wayne, New Jersey, earlier this month, with shooting also planned for New York City and Miami, according to Complex.

Jordan Takes the Tubbs Torch
Ricardo Tubbs has a short, sharp lineage. Philip Michael Thomas created the role opposite Don Johnson when the show premiered in 1984, and Jamie Foxx played him in Michael Mann's 2006 film alongside Colin Farrell. Now it's Jordan's turn, and he's arriving at the peak of his game.
Back in March, he was on the Oscars stage accepting Best Actor for Ryan Coogler's Sinners, a win the room greeted with a standing ovation. Going from playing twins Smoke and Stack to working undercover in a pastel-soaked 80s cop thriller is a fun left turn.
His pairing with Butler, himself a Best Actor nominee for Elvis, is the kind of buddy-cop matchup studios dream about. Two leading men who can carry a movie on their own, sharing one squad car.

A Stacked Squad Around Them
The supporting cast runs deep. Walton Goggins, Andre Holland, John Leguizamo, Alden Ehrenreich and Edi Gathegi are all aboard, along with Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, Michael Irby and comedian Andrew Schulz. Character details for the ensemble are still under wraps.
The release is still a long way off. May 2028 is the date to circle.
